The New Zealand Law Commission has proposed the abolition of the discriminatory, sexist, anti-male and offensive offence "Male Assaults Female", which carries a higher maximum penalty than does Common Assault.

The New Zealand Equality Education Foundation has long campaigned for this abolition to take place.
