The words printed below were written in 1883 in Washington D.C. by Frederick Douglass, as Negro born into slavery in 1817. He escaped in 1838 and stayed in England for a time. Friends there bought his freedom. He returned to America and became a great reformer, lecturer and writer -- and a major force for abolition and equal rights for all people in America.

"In a composite Nation like ours, made up of almost every variety of human family, there should be, before the law, no rich, no poor, no high, no low, no black, no white, but one country, one citizenship, equal rights and a comon destiny for all."

His words are as true today as they were then.

Therefore, to the Members of the House of Representatives of New Zealand in Parliament,

we the undersigned request

THE ABOLITION OF SEPARATE ELECTORAL ROLLS
