Dear sir/Madam

Official Information Request

Under the Official Information Act, please send me a copy of TVNZ's policy on the pronunciation and spelling of the following:

2. Words of Maori-language origin which are used in your English-language programmes.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Zohrab

I promptly received the following reply from Television New Zealand:

Hi Peter,

Thanks for contacting us - great to hear from you and sorry for the delay replying.

I understand you want some kind of policy for Maori pronunciation. Our presenters and other reporters and team members have extensive training in Te Reo language but this training is not a policy per se - can you elaborate a little? What do you need the information for, so I can make the relevant enquiries?

Hopefully I have assisted in some way.

Let me know if you have any further queries. I am here to help.

All the best and stay well!

Chris Gilchrist

I promptly received the following reply from the Minister of Broadcasting

:

Dear Mr Zohrab,

I refer to your below request under the Official Information Act transferred from Minister O’Connor to Hon Kris Faafoi as the Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media.

Ordinarily we would transfer your request to TVNZ as the information to which your request relates is more closely connected with the functions of TVNZ. In these circumstances. We are required by section 14 of the OIA to transfer your request. However, I have been in touch with TVNZ and understand they have already received your request and will provide a response in accordance with the OIA.

You will hear further from TVNZ concerning your request.

Kind regards,

Olivia

Olivia Cross | Private Secretary – Broadcasting

Office of Hon Kris Faafoi | Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media

I later received the following further reply from Television New Zealand:

Hi there Peter,

Your query (Ticket no. 70119) has been responded to. To add additional comments, please reply to this email.

Hi again Peter,

It would be good to get a little more elaboration from you. I have contacted the news team and there is not an official policy for what you are asking.

If you can accommodate by giving me a reason for the query that will help. I will register as an OIA if you are not satisfied with the information above - an OIA is a more complicated process through our legal channels.

Hopefully I have assisted in some way.

Let me know if you have any further queries. I am here to help.

All the best and stay well!

On 22 June 2020, I received the following further reply from Television New Zealand:

Dear Mr Zohrab

No such policy exists, or is required, and therefore Section 18(e) of the Act applies.

Yours sincerely

On 25 June 2020, I replied as follows:

Dear Mr. McAnulty,

Section 18(e) of which Act are you referring to, please?

Regards,

Peter Zohrab
